I will admit that I am surprised at myself for the order this is taking.
Don’t get me wrong, Californication is a wonderfully written show that I thoroughly enjoy…as I am writing this, I am almost through season two. David Duchovny has what could be surmised as his dream role as writer Hank Moody. Evan Handler is also fantastic in it as agent to the stars, Charlie Runkle…whom just played stunt dick during a porn shoot in the last ep I saw. Natasha McElhorne and Madeline Martin also both play wonderful foils to Moody’s moody self.
I watched the first season back in the spring of 2008 when it was first shown on Canadian television. Then wife #2 and I sat through all twelve episodes over a single weekend in the beginning. The skin, the language, the fun…Hank is like Homer Simpson but with some intellect to back it up and even less self control. I suspect the reason why it has taken me this long to get around to season two is that I was connecting it to, now, ex-wife #2.
Of course, the other odd thing about timing would be that I am posting this before mentioning a somewhat well known other series that Duchovny was in that is even higher on Stranded’s Scale of Awesomeness…but we will discuss The X-Files soon enough.
Speaking of, this show…hilarious as it is…has shown me that Duchovny cannot act. Hank Moody is, in essence, Fox Mulder without the alien obsession.
